26.11.2008 WAPUSK NATIONAL PARK

Our last morning in the park treats us to a wonderful sunrise and gorgeous light!

The Hudson Bay is still open and the bears are really anxious to set off and go hunting…

Close encounters with a huge male…. just a few centimeter nose to nose… a thrilling experience!

Mum and cubs on a wonderful sunny morning….

20.11.2008 WAPUSK NATIONAL PARK

Our routine for the next start with breakfast at seven and ready to go at 8.30.

All day is spent on the Tundra Buggies in search of Polar Bears and after sunset around 4pm we are back to camp for a nice hot shower followed by appetizers, dinner and after dinner entertainments (live music, slideshow and educational lectures).

I’m amazed to see how many of them are around. We only have to pick the best one… and start working…

They are extremely curious creatures and will check us out very closely….

We end the day with a gorgeous sunset and two bears sparring in the distance.

19.11.2008 CAPE CHURCHILL – WAPUSK NP

Today is a travel day. We have to move camp from Polar Bear Point to Cape Churchill inside the Wapusk National Park boundaries.

It is a hard and dangerous job. We start very early in the morning to break camp and detach all the vehicles.

A snow storm is not making the job easier and on the way we encounter many technical problems.

We are supposed to set camp before sunset but…

we arrive late at night, in a total white out with strong winds and plenty of polar bears all around….

Base camp is ready and we are having dinner around midnight…. what a day!!!!

18.11.2008 CHURCHILL – MANITOBA – CANADA

We arrive in Churchill Manitoba on a wonderful but extremely sunny day. We are so lucky that in the afternoon we can visit the “Polar Bear jail” when a couple of polar bears are going to be released by helicopter.

Late afternoon we board the Tundra buggy and we head for our camp at Polar Bear Point. We arrive at the lodge where we are assigned our bunks and can familiarize with the various trucks.

The sleeping truck … 18 people in bunks … two toilets and one shower to share….

The bunk… 2 x 1.5 m where we sleep and fit all the clothes and camera equipment….

The dining room and kitchen… warm and cozy…
